SoundGlasses
In order to take a hands-free phone call, there are number of ways; however, almost all of them require that person to wear some device on his ear. This could be annoying for many people as not everyone is comfortable having a device stuck in his ear for long. Moreover, this type of devices also reduces the person’s the ability to hear the sounds in his surroundings. Buhel has introduced a different approach in its new device called ‘SG05 SoundGlasses’. In this device, the sound is relayed through bone conduction method which leaves the ears of that person open to the world around him.
Bone conduction
SoundGlasses use Bluetooth 4.0 technology to communicate with the user’s smartphone whether it is iOS or Android or Windows Phone. There are two transducers on the glasses; one transducer is on the left arm while the other transducer is on the right arm. They are used to play back the audio phone call, music from the smartphone’s memory and music from a MP3 Player connected via Bluetooth. Just like other bone conduction devices, the vibrations from the transducers travel through the sides of the user’s skull to the inner ear. There they are heard as sound.
Advantages
The biggest advantage of this technology is that the ear canal remains open to sounds in the surroundings especially oncoming traffic. Another advantage of SoundGlasses is of hearing protection in very noisy environments like an industrial plant.
Structure
There is a bidirectional mic fitted in the bridge of the SoundGlasses which is a noise-cancelling mic that users use for the conversation. A multifunctional button is located on the glasses which allow the user to place and end calls, and it is also used for activating the Siri/Cortana. The glasses have a lithium-ion battery which takes about three hours to fully charge. That is enough for 3 hours of talk time or 300 hours of standby time.
Accessories
SoundGlasses comes with two very useful things. The first thing is the multiple interchangeable Category 3 UV-certified lenses, and the second thing is an adapter that allows the user to mount his prescription lenses. Atellani is the parent company of Buhel which is nowadays raising production funds on the Kickstarter’s website for SoundGlasses. If everything goes according to the plan, a pledge of $160 will get a person a set of SoundGlasses. However, it is estimated that retail price of the glasses is going to a little more than $270.
